- Luggage Identification |
When
travelling, there is always a risk that your luggage will be lost
or misplaced. It is always recommended that you mark your luggage
with your contact information so that you can be easily reached
when your luggage is found. Be aware, however, that the information
you provide can cause a security risk to you.
"Luggage
thieves" will hang around airports, but they may not only be interested
in stealing your luggage. These thieves are aware that you are on
your way out of town, and there is a good possibility that your
residence is vacant while you are away. Those handy little identification
tags, on which you've marked your name, address, and phone number,
have now provided a thief with specific information on where to
go looting. You could come home from your trip to quite a surprise.
Protect
yourself. It is important to provide contact information, just be
cautious about the information you provide. Rather than providing
personal information, mark your luggage with your address and telephone
number at work. A new trend with travelers, is to provide an e-mail
address. You can provide non-descript information for identification
without providing information a thief can use to their advantage.

The Internet
can be incredibly useful when planning a trip. You can research destinations,
book tours, reserve lodging, purchase airline tickets. The possibilities
are endless. Use the Internet to your advantage.
Many
sites offer bookings for hotels, car rentals, and airline flights. You
have access to virtually the same information as travel agents do. If
you are not comfortable actually booking online, you can certainly use
these sites for researching and comparison-shopping.
Prior
to using an online booking service, make sure you understand the ins and
outs of the service being offered. How is your booking confirmed? Are
there any restrictions? Do the rates include applicable taxes?
Be aware
that sites use different currencies. If you are booking a hotel at a great
rate, make sure it is in the currency you expect. One traveler was sorely
disappointed that the hotel she booked for $90.00 CDN turned out to be
a charge of $140.00 CDN. The currency of all rates on the site was in
US dollars.
Do not
limit yourself to one site. Be sure to comparison shop for rates at other
sites and check rates with a travel agent. Use all of your resources to
ensure that you are paying the lowest price possible.

Jetlag
can affect you in a variety of ways. You may experience a variety of symptoms
including headaches, naseua, insomnia, bowel irritations, and fatigue.
Why do we suffer from jetlag and is there any way to prevent it?
Each
person has an "inner clock" which is known as circadian rhythms. When
you travel through time zones, you upset your body's natural inner clock.
The more time zones you travel through, the more likely you are to suffer
from jetlag.
There
are a variety of ways to lessen, or prevent, jetlag suffering.
- Prior to your
trip, slowly adjust your sleep schedule to that of the time zone you
will be in.
- Avoid, or minimalize,
consumption of alcohol or caffinated beverages.
- Exercise when
possible. In the air, take short strolls when possible. During layovers,
walk around.
- Drink water!
Try drinking at least a liter of water two to three hours before your
flight and continue to drink plenty of water to keep you hydrated,
during your flight.
If you
do suffer from jetlag, resist the demand of your inner clock. Stay awake
and sleep as your new time zone dictates. Try to follow your normal routine,
adjusted to the time of the zone you are in. Avoid taking naps as this
will only prolong your jetlag. If you do suffer from jetlag, the good
news is that it normally wears off within a day.
